Windows 11 24H2 is getting a Multi-app camera mode that allows multiple apps to use your laptop's webcam at the same time. A frustrating limitation is being removed.

Windows and webcams, it's often a frustrating combination. Up until now, it was always possible to use your webcam in only one app. If you wanted to use the webcam in another app, you had to close the first application first. That intermediate step will no longer be necessary from Windows 11 24H2, Windows Latest noted in a preview version of the update.

Multiple apps at the same time
Windows 11 will soon get a Multi-app camera mode, which allows you to use your webcam in multiple apps at the same time. In this mode, it will not be possible to adjust webcam settings directly from the apps that use your camera. This will only be possible from the Windows settings: Microsoft is therefore keeping it a bit cumbersome.

There are many theories about why the webcam in Windows is limited to one app, but no one knows the exact reason. Privacy can be an argument to avoid keeping your webcam active in an app that you are no longer using.

It could also be a technical limitation from previous Windows versions when webcams still required a lot of processing power. Initially, these limitations also applied to audio and microphone, but this was addressed earlier by Microsoft.

Basic Mode
The Windows 11 24H2 update will introduce an additional new camera mode: Basic Mode. In this mode, you reset your webcam to the basic settings and functionality. This makes it easier for the average user to troubleshoot problems with the camera.

The update is expected in the fall and will introduce many new features. It will be the biggest and most important Windows update of the year.
